Fitness trainers need to know the origin and insertion of most muscles to help you move the right part of your body for safe and effective results.

But experienced fitness trainers know that you exercise because something originates in the pit of your stomach, deep inside you, it then transfers to your mind and thought and finally it inserts itself into your activity.

To get results you first pay attention to the origin of your feelings and thoughts before you pay attention to origin of your muscles. You pay attention to how your feelings and thoughts insert themselves into your actions before you pay attention to where your muscle fibers insert themselves.

Whether you exercise alone or with a trainer, you need to focus on making sure that your real and deep reason for your exercise is not lost in the organized chaos of the exercise.

The easiest way to keep the feelings alive is to have a written goal and a picture that goes with the end result. Keep it close to you, read and watch it regularly.

Why do you go to the gym, diet, or take the time to workout?

Very few will respond as, “Because I love the pain and the sweat.” You may love the feeling but for most the reason is something else.

Looking great, losing weight, dropping a dress size or two, staying young, lowering the cholesterol, being healthy, feeling attractive, getting married are some of the real reasons we exercise.

Workout rarely is goal; it is usually a way to get to your goal. As human beings we all seem to suffer from short attention spans. We start looking for something and establish a goal and couple of minutes later or couple of days later we get distracted with something else and change direction. Usually this change of direction keeps us in a loop, a never ending cycle.

We start exercising and then we stop. We start and stop dieting or jump from one diet to another. This continuous start and stop is why you find yourself in the same position over and over again. We put in short bursts of effort and then we stop without ever achieving what we want.

One effective way to break out of these cycles is visualization. Visualization is your ability to clearly see yourself as you want to be. It is your ability to feel the ripples on your six pack abs as you run your hands over them, your ability to see yourself putting on the new smaller dress or pants in front of the mirror, your ability to hear the praise from others when they say, “Wow, You look fantastic. Can I get in on the secret?”

This image of yourself being the way you want to be gradually pulls you away from the way you are towards the way you want to be. The more clearly you see yourself as you want to be, the more focused your attention will be and the longer you can keep on doing what you need to do.

When you plan your workouts, don’t just focus on just getting the workout done, but focus on the results workouts bring you. The more you practice this, the easier it becomes and you’ll find your workouts to go smoother and become more productive. You’ll notice that you begin thinking in terms of “I want to” instead of “I have to.”

Take a look at the video below as I take Cecilia through a simple short pre-workout visualization exercise.

I am in love = Life is wonderful.

I am out of love = I hate living.

Emotions motivate us, help us take action, boost our energy and make life wonderful.

And then …

Wham!

They pass and leave us tired, disappointed and hurt.

It is like a roller coaster ride.

But there is a way to eat your cake and have it too. And that takes planning for success and a clear mental picture. This mental picture creates the container for the emotions to be directed and produce results.

Without the mental image the emotions vanish into the sand like water and without the emotions, the mental image is an empty useless cup.

Plan for your success and then fill it with all the feelings related to your goal as if it was already achieved.

It will help to actually carry this image with you, in your wallet, on your cell phone, wherever.
